More new features
The update also adds multiple pictures to many place listings, some of them zoomable to full size. Select places even include videos. If you’re in the US, Canada, the UK or Australia, take a look at the new State and National Parks (“National Trust Sites” in the UK) category featuring rich place results including Wikipedia links. – Speaking of links, the built-in homepage viewer can now be used in landscape mode!

We also improved the ratings and reviews section. So far, we’ve received great feedback about this feature and we’re excited about the thousands of reviews written so far! The new version displays even more reviews written by Google users.

iOS 4.0 or higher
Where To? 4.1 now requires iOS 4.0 or higher. This allows us to streamline the testing process and remove a lot of special cases for legacy devices. Our data shows us that only 2.4% are affected. If we omit devices that are upgradable to iOS 4.x we’re even down to 0.3% of all devices. A small price to pay that’ll be outweighed easily by the faster development process! So only if you’re on a first generation iPhone or iPod touch, you’ll have to stick with the last version of Where To? and should back it up in iTunes.

PowerListings lets merchants fix inaccurate listings across the Web, and update them all at once from one central site.

Where To? now helps to answer such questions. Much requested and new in 4.0 we integrated ratings & reviews. So if you enjoyed an especially delicious meal, time to give praise! Inform your fellows about the doctor’s unfriendly service or let them know that a boutique offers 10% off for purchases over $100.

Where To? collects ratings and reviews from all Where To? users. It also displays reviews from Google users and calculates an average rating for each place.

Also new in 4.0: You can share your reviews on Facebook and Twitter to let your friends know. We’ve created an awesome web microsite with the unique Where To? look & feel. So be sure to share your reviews diligently!

US users will also enjoy enhanced business listings with additional descriptions, images and special offers. More on that in the coming weeks when we officially launch the service.

To celebrate Oktoberfest, we’ve included a little Bavarian gimmick in the app. I don’t wish to give away too much at this point – just a little hint:

The search feature not only lets you search 700+ categories, 2,400+ brands, your address book contacts and arbitrary locations…

What are your favorite Oktoberfest apps? – Please let us know in the comments. To start with, we recommend iYodl, a fun app to learn the most important Bavarian words (“Ge bring ma no a Maß” etc.) – so you’ll sound like a local in the tent!

I recommend using Vodafone. Actually, I tried Movistar (by market leading Telefónica) first – they offer a €10, 100 MB for 30 days prepaid tariff (translated) – but my experience with Movistar/Telefónica was not ideal, to say the least. Internet access was blocked on my SIM card and it took 5 (!) calls to their hotline until they finally found that out – even though the SMS message said I was good to go.

So I went to a Vodafone store. Vodafone offers a prepaid Internet tariff for €3.50 per week. Traffic is unlimited but you’ll be throttled to 128 kbps after 20 MB/day. First, I had to buy a SIM card (XS8 pack) for €9 which basically gives you credit for 2 weeks of Internet usage (that would be €7). The SIM card also has voice calling enabled with 8 cents per minute/SMS.

However, there’s one major catch: You have to activate the Internet option first by texting TPTarjeta to 22521. If you forget this, you’ll surf at a ridiculously expensive tariff. I actually sent the activation SMS but never received a confirmation message ruining my €9 credit in only half a day… (and don’t even try to get a reimbursement for that!). So my advice is to let the sales rep activate the Internet option for you right at the shop.

For larger downloads or if you’re mainly staying at a single place, it makes sense to resort to a café or pub with Wi-Fi which is very common in Spain. Usually you’ll get the (static) Wi-Fi password at your first order and are able to use it later on if you walk by again
