Streets 2.0 for iOS – Street View on Steroids, Launches from iOS Maps

FutureTap today announces Streets 2.0 for iPhone and iPad, a major update to its “Street View” app that provides panoramic, street-level imagery of any location pinpointed in Maps. In version 2.0 the app is renamed to “Streets” in order to be found easier on the App Store. Compared to the Google Maps app, Streets offers a much greater resolution and zoom range, displays the street view coverage and is optimized for iPad, too. Version 2.0 also adds social sharing of panoramas discovered with the app. Streets searches cities, addresses, or contacts, enables interactive tours of 500+ “gallery places” like museums and coral reefs.

Amidst the controversy of the ongoing Google vs. Apple map wars and Apple supplying their own Maps app in iOS 6, the consumer has been forced to stand by as the two mega-companies did battle. With Streets 2.0, iOS users can reap the benefit of market forces at work to enjoy a map experience superior, yet integrated into, the maps from Google and Apple.

Apple’s Maps app, though it lacks a true street view, is good and getting better. Now, users can touch to create a destination pushpin in Maps and, with just a few taps, view that location within Streets in a high-resolution, street view display layered on top of Google vector maps and satellite imagery. One touch smoothly moves the user from Streets back to Maps, and the integration is so intuitive, the two feel like one app.

Version 2.0 adds a great number of useful new features. These are the most important ones:

• A blue overlay indicates the street view coverage to inform the user whether street view is available for a given location. Alternatively, the current traffic conditions can be displayed in the map.
• Google vector maps and high resolution satellite imagery instead of the standard Apple map provide a richer, more detailed map experience. The map can be tilted and rotated using touch gestures.
• Interesting panorama findings can now be shared with friends via email, iMessage, Facebook and Twitter or saved as geo-referenced photos in the camera roll.
