Where To?
A search functionality is available on nearly every page (in Where To? 2.5 or higher). On the start screen, the search button is on the top left. In a category list, in Favorites and in Recents, the search bar can be revealed by scrolling above the first entry. On top of the map (or results list) the search button is on the top right. All search facilities initiate a search in all categories and brands. The results are grouped by the category group. When a search is initiated from a specific page (let’s say Food & Drink) results from this group appear first. The same is true for Favorites and Recents.
The first entry labeled “Free Search” has a special meaning: It allows to initiate a free search for categories that are not listed in Where To?.
Yes, you can customize Where To? (≥2.5) and add your own categories. To do that, first select one of the major groups (Food & Drink, Shopping and so on). Then scroll above the first entry to reveal the search field.
In the search field type in your search term and select the first entry labeled “Free Search”. Adjust the search term if needed. If you’re satisfied, tap the Plus button below the map or at the right of the “Free search” entry in the search filter list. Confirm to add the new entry to the group.
Yes, you can delete categories from the list simply by swiping horizontally over the entry. Then tap “Delete” to confirm. To undelete categories from the default set, select “Restore Default Entries” in the Advanced Settings. Self-added categories that were deleted can’t be undeleted.
Where To? uses Google Maps data to retrieve its results. You can easily add your business to the database (or modify existing entries) via:
http://www.google.com/local/add/
Please allow some weeks for the changes to take effect.
You can remove most entries from the list via Google Maps. Search for the entry on http://maps.google.com then click “Edit” and then “Remove Place”. You have to be logged in with a (free) Google Account to make the editing links appear. You can not remove entries that have been “claimed” by the owner.

Since Where To? is relying on Google to fetch its results, you can easily check the coverage for your place on http://maps.google.com. Where To? uses localized search queries for all supported languages. Currently these are English (American and British), German, French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and Greek.
In this case, Where To? uses English search terms. While this works quite OK, the result quality might not be optimal. If you’re willing to help us localizing Where To? in your language, we’re glad to hear from you.
Yes, as long as your local language is one of the supported languages. (Currently these are English (American and British), German, French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and Greek.). Open the Where To? settings and choose your language under “Categories”. Choose “System Language” to use the iPhone’s system language (or English if the system language is not supported by Where To?).
Where To? does work on iPod touch running OS 3.0 or higher. Where To? relies on a live Internet connection to retrieve its results. Location detection should work too. If not, please check the tip “How can I make sure, WiFi positioning works?”
First, make sure, “Location Services” are enabled in your “General” Settings. Second, make sure to allow Where To? the usage of Location Services. Where To? asks the first two starts to approve it. (Then it won’t ask again.)
If you checked these points and location detection using the “locate-me” button on the bottom left of the map screen still doesn’t work, please check the following depending on your device:
See also: “Can I specify at which location Where To? searches by default?” below.
WiFi positioning is a great way for iPod touch and iPhone 2G users to enable precise location detection via “WiFi triangulation”. This method uses WiFi networks around you to locate you. Some WiFi networks are not yet in the database so the location detection fails (or resorts to more inaccurate cell tower triangulation in the case of iPhone 2G). Fortunately, you can fix this by submitting your access point to the Skyhook Wireless service that Apple uses.
Go to this website:
http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/submit_ap.php
Enter your address to locate you in the map. Then you need the MAC address of your WiFi access point. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, just Option-click the AirPort symbol in the menu bar. The MAC address will appear right beneath the name of your wireless network (like 12:34:56:78:9a:bc).
Skyhook needs a few weeks to process your data so be patient.
Just use the search button on the top right of the map and enter any address. Initiate an address search by tapping on the first entry labeled “Search Address” or tap the “Search” key on the keyboard.
Tip: you can also enter a city name, a zip code or just a street name if the map is already centered at the desired city. Or you can enter the name of a contact and search at the address of a contact. If you prefer choosing a contact without typing, you can do so by tapping the bookmark icon in the search field (make sure the field is empty). If the address is ambiguous Where To? gives the choice between multiple found locations.
Yes, in Settings > Advanced you can choose whether the current geo-location or the last used position on the map is searched by default (available in Where To? 2.5 or higher).
Where To? 2.6 or higher supports the compass of the iPhone 3GS. It displays the angle of orientation and when tapping the locate-me button twice, it rotates the map according to the compass heading. Please be aware that the compass might return inaccurate values due to interferences. Check this Apple KB article for details how to fix it. Prior to leaving a bad review because of poor heading information, please compare with the builtin “Maps” application.
Please check your version of Where To?. The version number is indicated in Settings -> Where To? at the bottom. Where To? 1.x suffers from a bug introduced by Apple in iPhone OS 3.1. We have reported the bug to Apple. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do from our side except waiting that Apple fixes the bug.
In any case, Where To? 2 doesn’t exhibit this behavior since the map is integrated into the app. So we recommend upgrading to the new version. Where To? 2 is a paid upgrade for Where To? 1.x customers.
Please remove the old Where To? app from your device. First, make sure to select the right one for deletion. To differentiate, Where To? 2.5 or higher shows these buttons on the start screen whereas Where To? 1.x doesn’t. To delete Where To? 1.x, tap and hold the old Where To? icon on the home screen, tap the x-Icon and acknowledge the deletion.
Yes. In the Where To? settings you can choose from “Map”, “Satellite” or “Hybrid” (satellite view including map) mode.
iPhone OS by default locks your phone after a certain time of inactivity. While this is useful in most situations, it might not be useful when you’re driving and using Where To? in “Tracking Mode”. The tracking mode is enabled by tapping the locate-me button on the left of the toolbar below the map and makes your map auto-follow your current geo position.
You can configure Where To? to disable the system’s standard inactivity auto-lock in the Where To? settings:
Sometimes there are bugs in iPhone apps that cannot be reproduced easily in a test environment. This is normally because the bug in some ways is specific to the environment that it occurs in, this may be due to network or hardware configuration or due to data (unexpected search results etc). In cases like this a crash report is essential to determine what the problem is.
A crash report file contains information on the state of the application at the time of the crash. It doesn’t contain any personal information. The crash reports are saved on your iPhone at the time of the crash, when you connect up with the sync cable the reports are copied to your computer. The location of the reports depends on your operating system:
Mac OS X : ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[DEVICE_NAME]
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/[DEVICE_NAME]
Windows Vista: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[DEVICE_NAME]
On Vista “Application Data” maybe hidden, so you may need to show hidden files.
There are two types of files stored here, .plist files and .crash files. We only need the .crash files. The files will start with “WhereTo” and contain a date stamp.
You can right click (or Control-click) on the crash file and send as an email attachment.
Once we have the crash file it should not take long to analyze it and get back to you.
When tapping “Directions” on the details page of a point of interest, Where To? (≥2.5) automatically detects if NAVIGON MobileNavigator is installed. If it’s installed, you can choose whether directions should be shown in “Maps” or NAVIGON MobileNavigator. To skip the selection dialog you can select your preferred directions helper application in Settings > Advanced.
If no selection dialog is displayed although NAVIGON MobileNavigator is installed, please try to reboot your iPhone. We are aware of some cases where the Navigon link was not available after updating or installing new versions of MobileNavigator until a reboot. Please also note that NAVIGON MobileNavigator 1.4.0 for the British Isles is not compatible; make sure to update to MobileNavigator British Isles version 1.4.1 (or higher).
If NAVIGON still doesn’t appear for directions, please contact us and state exactly which NAVIGON product and version you’re using.
This requires Where To? 2.6 or higher and TomTom 1.3 or higher. There are two options to launch TomTom from inside Where To:
Use “Directions” to immediately start a turn-by-turn navigation and use “Open Map” if you aim to add the location to TomTom. In both cases you can skip the external app selection dialog by selecting “TomTom” as your Directions Helper Application in Settings > Advanced.
If no selection dialog is displayed although the TomTom app in version 1.3 or higher is installed, please try to reboot your iPhone. We are aware of some cases where the TomTom link was not available after updating or installing new versions of TomTom until a reboot.
Make sure you’ve installed Where To? 2.6 or higher. For both social networks, you need to authenticate the first time you’re posting. Then you can edit the update you’re about to post. The default update message (“Heading to…”) can be edited in the settings. For Twitter, the link is automatically shortened to make room for your text.
Pro Tip: If you enable “Add a location to your tweets” in your Twitter Account Settings, the tweet will include the geo location of the venue. And if you want to speed things up, you can opt to automatically post your updates without prior editing in the Where To? Sharing Settings.
